Agtually…I have never been more amazed by Chris or more in awe of his determination and fearlessness than I am now that we are beekeepers. More correctly, now that Chris is a beekeeper and I’m a chicken behind the camera, ha!!
If you’ve followed our blog for any period of time then you’ll know that not only do I have a strange sense of humor but I’ve been blessed with very vivid imagination. This combination can and quite often does lead to the over exaggeration of a situation.
This exaggerating comes to play each and every time Chris and I go out and check on the hives. My fearless husband interacts quite closely with the bees without a care in the world. He lifts up trays without the slightest hesitation. I, on the other hand, tend to rely on the safety of our camera with its zoom lens.
The buzzing of the bees, though not a dangerous noise, reminds me of a time when I was little and outside playing with my sister and our cousin. I don’t remember what game we were making up but I have never forgotten the bees that flew out of the hollowed tree and repeatedly stung my cousin all over his body. I remember the buzzing noise as we ran inside and the buzzing noise as my parents, aunt and uncle tried to get the bees away from him. I don’t remember how many stings he received but I’ll never forget the whelps on his face, arms, legs, and torso…and the buzzing of the bees.
I’m happy to report that my cousin recovered from that day. We actually celebrated his wedding to a wonderful woman this past January. Though the visible stings are no longer there, I do still think they left an imprint on me as the nervousness sets in each time that Chris and I visit the hives. I’m getting better with each visit but I must admit that my imagination sets in and I see the bees as I did that day, years ago.
Chris’ patience with me is wonderful as he understands that I’m trying and trying to be brave. As with all our other adventures, he knows it’s a matter of time until I’m comfortable checking the hives almost on my own…ear plugs may help get me there quicker, ha!!
